Renal Anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease

renal <a href=http://www.kidneydoctors.org/kidney-insufficiency-basic/1095.html target=_blank class=infotextkey>anemia</a> in CKd].jpgChronic kidney disease (CKD) presents a series of symptoms, such as weakness, poor appetite, changes in urine volume and color, high blood pressure and anemia. There is a close relationship between chronic kidney disease and renal anemia.

Causes of renal anemia in CKD

Decrease of erythropoietin

Kidney has the function of producing erythropoietin (EPO) which produces hemoglobin. Due to CKD, kidney gets more and more damages. Accordingly, the production of hemoglobin becomes less and less. Therefore, it appears anemia, especially when creatinine level is higher than 3.5mg/dL.

Lack of iron

Due to CKD, patients usually suffer poor appetite, which affects the absorption of iron. Meanwhile, due to kidney function impairment, iron will leak out through urine. Accordingly, there appears anemia.

Leakage of protein

Many CKD patients suffers proteinuria. Meanwhile, they also limit the intake of protein. When there is short of protein, it tends to bleed, which aggravates the condition of anemia.

Treatment to renal anemia

Traditional Chinese medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine can promote the production of erythropoietin. But it needs a long time to have effect.

Western medicine

The treatment of western medicine includes pharmaceutical drug, blood transfusion, and EPO injection. However, it cannot deal with the root cause.

The comprehensive treatment

Comprehensive treatment, the combination of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine, helps recombines EPO and stop further damages of kidney function.
