Can High Blood Urea Nitrogen Lead to Kidney Failure?

can high <a href=http://www.kidneydoctors.org/treatment-nephropathy/special-test/23.html target=_blank class=infotextkey>BUN</a> lead to <a href=http://www.kidneydoctors.org/kidney-failure-basic/736.html target=_blank class=infotextkey>kidney failure</a>.jpgBlood urea nitrogen (BUN) is an important index to show kidney function. The normal level of BUN in China is 3.2-7.1mmol/L. While in India, it is 9-20mg/dL.

Cause of high BUN

protein will be metabolized into water, carbon dioxide, and urea. Urea is the main metabolic wastes of protein, which will be almost filtered out by kidney. When kidney function gets damaged, it fails to excrete all the wastes, toxins, and excessive fluid adequately. Therefore, the wastes, toxins, and fluid will accumulate in body. This is the reason for BUN increase. If high BUN cannot be alleviated, it will, in turn, cause further damages to kidney function and finally lead to kidney failure.

Measures to decrease high BUN level

A proper diet

Since urea is the main metabolic product of protein, it is better to limit protein intake to decrease the burden of kidney. The protein intake should be 0.6-0.8g/kg.d. And high quality protein is a better choice, such as egg white, milk, and lean meat.

Diuretics contributes to increasing urine output, which will accelerate the filtration of BUN in blood.

Comprehensive therapy

As the root cause of high BUN is kidney function impairment, the fundamental way to decrease high BUN level is to repair the damaged but not necrotic kidney function. Comprehensive therapy, with osmosis and traditional Chinese medicine, help repair the damaged nephrons with herbal medicine essence through skin into kidney area by osmosis. Also, massage and medicated bath in TCM improve blood circulation, which attributes to accelerating the excretion of BUN.
