Purpose of nutritional therapy
※ Maintain good condition of the body.
※ Prevent or delay the process of kidney failure.
※ Stop or reduce the accumulation of metabolic wastes and toxins.
Acceptable daily intake of protein is 0.6g/kg.d. Sodium and water intake should be arranged according to different conditions. In general, sodium consumption is about 1-3g/d. Water intake is around 1500mL, which helps keep the balance between water and sodium. If there is obvious water retention, take some diuretics according to the doctor’s advice or decrease the intake of water and sodium.
Low potassium diet
Due to acidosis, oliguria, decomposition hypermetabolism, hypoinsulinemia, or long-time use of potassium-sparing diuretic, ACE inhibitor, it is tend to cause hyperkalemia. Therefore, it is essential to limit the intake of potassium. Food with low content potassium includes radish, turnip, celery, pumpkin, wax gourd, tomato, eggplant, cucumber, towel gourd, pear, pineapple, etc..
Low magnesium consumption
Since kidney failure tends to cause hypermagnesemia. The deposit of magnesium in bone can lead to osteodystrophy. The consumption of magnesium is about 200mg/d. Food with low content of magnesium includes mung bean, radish, Chinese yam, winter bamboo shoots, purslane, olive oil, and grape.
